Poetry of Kansas Here & Now, There & Then

Bobcat in Shawnee
slinks past houses, panting, hot,
seeks prey of water,

rabbits, birds. Bear crawls across
the Kansas state line. Lingers.

Finds little cover,
wizened crops, weakened trees. Leaves.
Where is the wizard?

“Lions and tigers and bears!
Oh, my!”  Oz slouches closer.
