114. To the Stars Through Difficulty: Jeremy Johnson

Seen from the perspective of the wide Kansas sky
(afforded by modern aviation’s stairway to the ceiling of our world),
the landscape below cordons trees, rivers, towns,
fields, and roads into an unruly and nameless hodgepodge
some century and a half distant from the earthbound imagination
of settler and native. But despite our encroaching upon the territory
of birds and dreams, what has the difference of a few miles made
on a celestial scale? We still share with our forebears sweat of brow,
sorrow in things lost, joy at their return, pleasure in good company,
and the myriad stories we tell among us to keep us going.
